Since its formation in 1994, a rare blend of technical brillance, thoughtful musicianship, and ensemble playing of outstanding quality has earned Hallé Brass an enviable reputation as one of Britain's most talented and versatile brass ensembles.

Hallé Brass is the most recent manifestation in a long tradition of fine brass ensembles that have arisen from the ranks of the internationally renowned Hallé Orchestra. This tradition goes back to the 1960s, when the Hallé Brass Consort, then one of the few groups of its type, commissioned and performed works by a large number of leading contemporary composers, including Sir Malcolm Arnold, John McCabe and Edward Gregson. Hallé Brass continue to foster the pioneering spirit of their predecessors, and are committed to enlarging the brass ensemble repertoire by commissioning new arrangements and original compositions for the medium.

In addition to their busy schedule in the recording studio, Hallé Brass are much in demand in the concert hall where their distinctive synthesis of superlative musicianship and virtuosity delights both in this country and abroad. As a result, Hallé Brass's concert circuit continues to widen. In August 1997, their tour of the United States included performances at Madison Square Park, the Salvation Army's Star Lake music camp near New York, and culminated in Washington, where they gave a joint performance with the United States Army Band on the steps of the Capitol.

The distinguished American band arranger and bass trombonist Mark Freeh, who has worked closely with Hallé Brass, is vastly impressed by the group's almost uncanny ability to change styles: "They are able to play as a small chamber group or explode like a band". Freeh's observation neatly sums up just one of the many qualities the make Hallé Brass such an exciting and sought-after ensemble.

Hallé Brass are Gareth Small and Tracey Redfearn (Trumpets), Julian Plummer (French Horn), Andrew Berryman (Trombone), and Andrew Duncan (Tuba). Although essentially a quintet, Hallé Brass frequently augments to facilitate the performance of larger scale works.

Hallé Brass specialise in educational work which includes workshops and clinics followed by a concert recital.
